Madrid, March 30: Spain has closed its airspace to US planes involved in the Iran war, the defence minister said Monday, marking another step in the government’s opposition to US and Israeli involvement in the conflict in the Middle East.
The country had already said the US couldn’t use jointly operated military bases in the Iran conflict, which Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has described as illegal, reckless and unjust.
Defence Minister Margarita Robles on Monday said the same logic applied to the use of Spanish airspace in the conflict.
Spain under Sanchez has been Europe’s loudest opposing voice against US and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.
Revolutionary Guard navy chief killed
Iran on Monday confirmed the death of Revolutionary Guard navy chief Alireza Tangsiri. Israel had claimed on Thursday that it killed Tangsiri, a rear admiral in the Iran navy.
A statement from the Guard on Monday, read on state television, said Tangsiri “joined the ranks of Allah due to the severity of his injuries.” It praised his efforts, particularly in helping Iran maintain a chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.
France probes Iran link after foiled bomb attack
French authorities are investigating a suspected link to Iran after thwarting a bomb attack outside a Bank of America building in Paris on the weekend, the interior minister said Monday.
The authorities suspect there could be a link to Iran due to similarities to other recent attempted attacks in Europe which a pro-Iran group claimed credit for, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.
On Saturday morning, Paris police officers spotted two suspects carrying a shopping bag near the premises of the Bank of America in the 8th arrondissement of the French capital. Three suspects have since been arrested. (AP)
