SHILLONG, April 1: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has extended his support to the demand for conducting Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Meghalaya.
Following the recent violence in Garo Hills, the demand for SIR has intensified in the state, especially in the plains belt of Garo Hills.
“We are for SIR and we are in touch with the Government of India and the Election Commission. It is something which should be done,” he said.
Reacting to the demand for amendment of the Scheduled Tribes List of 1950, Sangma said the government will examine the matter.
Sangma also revealed that the government will come out with separate electoral rolls for autonomous district councils.
“We will look at all the constitutional provisions but we are very clear that separate electoral rolls must come out,” he added.
