SHILLONG, April 4: Hundreds of trucks parked haphazardly on both sides of the Shillong-Guwahati Highway, particularly along the Jorabat-Byrnihat stretch, pose a significant safety risk to commuters.
The parking of these heavy vehicles directly adjacent to the main carriageway has been a recurring cause of fatal accidents, with high-speed vehicles and two-wheelers frequently crashing into stationary trucks.
Beyond safety concerns, the situation is causing massive traffic snarls; on Saturday, a major jam near Khanapara left commuters stranded for a considerable time.
When contacted, authorities stated that the sudden accumulation of trucks is a result of rigorous security checks being conducted in view of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam.
The issue has been taken up with the Kamrup district administration, and the Meghalaya government has been requested to extend cooperation regarding the security measures until April 19.
It is pertinent to note that Ri-Bhoi police are being apprised of the situation to implement traffic management and safety protocols along the affected stretches of the highway.
