SHILLONG, April 4: An abandoned Assam-type house was gutted in a fire that broke out around 10 pm on Saturday at Harisabha, near Laban Last Stop.
Fire tenders rushed to the spot, with two fire engines from Barabazaar Fire Station and one from Nongthymmai deployed to douse the blaze. The flames were brought under control before they could spread to nearby structures.
Police officials present at the site said they responded immediately after receiving information from members of the Laban Durbar.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Fire officer Dilip Rai said the priority was to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent houses.
He stated that the wooden structure was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but the blaze was contained within 10 to 15 minutes through coordinated relay efforts.
Meanwhile, residents of the area said the ownership of the house is unclear, with some claiming it is a disputed property that has long remained abandoned. A few also alleged that the structure had recently become a den for substance abuse. They added that an incident involving the assault of a boy inside the premises had been reported in the media not long ago.
