SHILLONG, April 4: Internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan architect Palinda Kannangara has called upon the architectural fraternity to “respect the space” and prioritise designs that minimise environmental impact.
Speaking at a three-day conclave organised by the Association of Architects, Assam (AAA) in Shillong on Friday, Kannangara advocated for minimalist architecture. “Greater happiness comes from simplicity than with complexity,” he said, quoting Lord Buddha.
The second edition of the AAA Conclave, themed ‘Regionalism in Architecture – A New Paradigm’, brought together over 175 professionals to discuss context-sensitive design and evolving regional identities.
During the conclave, Bengaluru-based architect Sanjay Mohe, designer of the iconic Titan building, urged young architects in the Northeast to integrate nature and local cultural elements into their work.
Similarly, Padma Shri Techi Gubin from Arunachal Pradesh advocated for the use of bamboo-based architecture enhanced by modern technology.
Other speakers included West Bengal’s Abin Chaudhri, who spoke on integrating the “spirit of the river” into designs, and Delhi-based Amritha Ballal, who raised concerns over “disastrous” urban planning in various regions.
Meanwhile, local professionals welcomed the gathering as a vital networking opportunity.
Meghalaya Architect Forum (MAF) president Freddie Wallang stated that the event helped local architects build connections with those from mainland India.
He added that Northeast architects are planning a dedicated platform for a better exchange of ideas.
On the other hand, MAF adviser Iban S. Mawkhroh highlighted Meghalaya’s unique architectural heritage, suggesting that visiting experts should explore the state’s living root bridges to further promote its natural legacy.
