SHILLONG, April 4: Patients in Meghalaya are likely to soon have access to advanced diagnostic facilities as NEIGRIHMS is in the process of procuring a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan machine.
PET scans are essential for detecting, staging and monitoring cancer, as well as evaluating heart disease and brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.
Currently, most cancer patients in the state are forced to travel to Guwahati for these tests at significant expense.
According to NEIGRIHMS Director Dr. Nalin Mehta, the institute, in addition to the procurement, is working to acquire a second PET scan machine through a public-private partnership (PPP) mode. Under this arrangement, the institute will maintain administrative control over the equipment.
He added that the facility intends to offer PET scans at CGHS rates to ensure affordability for patients.
Regarding the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Dr. Mehta informed that the 252-bed facility will become functional in phases.
The institute, according to Dr. Mehta, is currently awaiting the completion of the operation theatres (OT) in the RCC, which are expected to be commissioned by the end of summer.
While the full rollout is being phased in, comprehensive cancer care services—including advanced equipment and specialized staff—are already operational.
The RCC is expected to significantly benefit Meghalaya, which records a high incidence of cancer cases.
