SHILLONG, April 5: The NEHUSU and KSU NEHU unit have urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to take immediate steps to ensure a smooth leadership transition at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
In a joint representation submitted recently, the students’ bodies called for the prompt constitution of a Search Committee for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor, ahead of the completion of the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, which is scheduled to end in July 2026.
The organisations stressed that no extension should be granted to the current Vice Chancellor under any circumstances, and emphasised that the timely formation of the Search Committee is essential to avoid disruption in the university’s functioning.
As per university statutes, the constitution of such a committee is mandatory for initiating the appointment process of a new VC.
Raising concerns over the current administrative situation, the students’ bodies mentioned that Prof. Shukla has been absent from his duties for over one and a half years, resulting in what they described as a leadership vacuum that has adversely affected both academic and administrative activities at the university.
They also reiterated their ongoing non-cooperation movement, stating that under the present circumstances, the VC would not be accepted on campus.
Appealing for urgent intervention, NEHUSU and the KSU NEHU unit expressed hope that the state government would take necessary steps to safeguard the interests of the university and its student community.
