SHILLONG, April 6: The much-anticipated Laitumkhrah Commercial Market is set to open to the public, bringing relief and excitement to residents and local business owners alike.
Speaking on the progress of the project, East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday said while preparations are in the final stages for the opening, authorities are taking a cautious and systematic approach to ensure that all essential aspects are fully in place before the market is made operational. She emphasised that the government is committed to delivering a well-organised and efficient commercial space rather than rushing the inauguration.
She disclosed that the second phase of the project has already commenced, indicating the government’s long-term vision to expand and enhance the market’s infrastructure. According to her, phased development will help address future demands and ensure the facility remains sustainable.
Highlighting key concerns, Lyngdoh said that critical issues such as parking arrangements, waste management systems, drainage facilities, and uninterrupted power supply are being fine-tuned. She stressed that these components are vital for the smooth functioning of the market and for providing a hassle-free experience to both vendors and customers. The Rs 38-crore commercial complex, whose construction began in August 2020, was originally scheduled for completion in January last year. The market will house 183 stalls and include parking space for up to 100 vehicles, according to the detailed project report.
The market has been developed under the Shillong Smart City Project, which aims to modernise urban infrastructure and improve the overall quality of life in the city.
Lyngdoh noted that apart from boosting commercial activities, the project is also expected to significantly enhance the aesthetics of the area, making Laitumkhrah more organised, vibrant, and attractive.
She added that the successful completion of the project will mark another important milestone under the Smart City mission.
