SHILLONG, April 8: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah on Wednesday directed government departments to conduct regular mock exercises and strengthen emergency response systems ahead of the 2026 monsoon season.
Chairing a meeting of the District Coordination Committee’s Incident Response Team (IRT), Kurbah, who is also the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), urged officials to remain vigilant and ensure a prompt, coordinated response during disasters.
She called for regular fire safety audits of buildings and instructed all departments to maintain updated resource inventories to enable swift emergency action.
The meeting resolved that all departments must prioritise pre-monsoon measures, including the inspection of flood and landslide-prone areas.
Officials were also tasked with assessing vulnerable trees and power lines that could pose risks during heavy rain and strong winds.
The Deputy Commissioner noted that proactive planning is essential to minimise risks to lives and property. In case of emergencies, the public is advised to dial 112 for immediate assistance.
The review was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner and DDMA CEO S. Warjri, Block Development Officers, Sub-Divisional Officers, and representatives from the armed and paramilitary forces.
