MAWKYRWAT, April 8: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), South West Khasi Hills, has expressed concern over an ongoing conflict between two trucker groups regarding coke transportation from factories in the Nongjri area, under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division.
The dispute involves the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners & Drivers Association (MCTODA) and the South West Khasi Hills Truck Owners & Drivers Association (SWKHTODA).
HITO intervened following complaints from local drivers and labourers who reported being threatened while plying the roads or waiting at factory sites. Some drivers alleged that their cargo was forcibly unloaded and left on the road. HITO District president Paul Thyrniang stated that the organisation is not involved in the business and does not favour either association, but is concerned for the safety of local workers. He appealed to both groups to resolve the issue immediately to restore peace and protect the livelihoods of those dependent on the trade.
“If we cannot resolve this issue among ourselves, it will create hurdles for our growth and may allow outsiders to take advantage and snatch away these earning opportunities,” Thyrniang said.
Recently, SWKHTODA president Skingford Nongbri accused MCTODA of harassing its members, threatening drivers, and setting fire to cargo forcibly unloaded from trucks in the Nongjri area.
