NONGPOH, April 8: The Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi has prohibited the dumping of garbage and waste in rivers, streams, drainage systems, and along National Highways across the district.
The directive follows observations that shops, commercial establishments, and residents have been indiscriminately disposing of plastic waste, debris, sewage, and animal waste into water bodies and roadsides. These activities have blocked drainage channels and obstructed natural water flow, increasing the risk of waterlogging and flash floods.
Invoking Sections 30 and 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the district administration has banned the disposal of any form of waste into rivers, drains, culverts, and stormwater channels with immediate effect. All residents and establishments are directed to use only authorised waste collection systems or designated disposal sites.
The order also mandates that all establishments, including cowshed owners, maintain cleanliness on their premises and ensure no waste or sewage is discharged into drains.
To ensure compliance, local authorities and headmen have been instructed to conduct regular inspections. The administration warned that violators will face strict action under the Disaster Management Act, including fines and prosecution. Additional penalties may also be imposed under municipal and environmental laws.
The general public has been urged to cooperate to ensure the free flow of drainage systems and prevent artificial flooding. The order remains in force until further notice.
