SHILLONG, April 9: After 17 years of delays, water has finally reached the treatment plant under Phase 3 of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS).
PHE Minister Marcuise Marak informed reporters on Thursday that while pumping is now complete, distribution work remains ongoing. “Work is still pending at distribution sites as pipe-laying continues. The department is facing some challenges with road crossings in certain stretches,” Marak said, adding that various localities are cooperating to help complete the long-overdue project.
Phase 3 has been under implementation for nearly two decades, hampered by repeated delays and missed deadlines.
The Minister also provided an update on the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, noting that the project is progressing well now that land acquisition hurdles have been resolved. The department expects to complete the dams by next year.
Additionally, Marak highlighted that 747 critical water sources across the state require government intervention. He stated that long-term afforestation and the construction of water reservoirs are necessary to protect these sources.
