SHILLONG, April 9: The Federation of Piggery Farmers Meghalaya (FPFM) has urged the state government to declare African Swine Fever (ASF) a “State Agricultural Emergency” following an outbreak that has killed hundreds of pigs across the state.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department has confirmed the spread of the contagious disease in several districts, including government farms. With no vaccine or cure available, the federation warned that the mounting losses are threatening the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, FPFM chairman Prosper Dorphang said farmers are struggling with livestock deaths, falling incomes, and inadequate compensation. He noted that the absence of early-warning systems and a slow response in remote areas have worsened the crisis.
The federation called for the immediate deployment of rapid-response veterinary teams, timely compensation, and the establishment of disease surveillance centres alongside village-level biosecurity training.
Dorphang also highlighted the influx of cheaper pigs and pork from states like Punjab and Assam. He argued that these imports are undercutting local farmers and increasing the risk of further infection. Despite producing higher-quality meat, local rearers are unable to compete with the lower-priced external supply.
To protect the local industry, the FPFM called for strict monitoring of interstate imports, a “Buy Local, Support Local” policy, and price support mechanisms. It also sought the strengthening of the Meghalaya Piggery Mission through improved market linkages and infrastructure.
The federation will hold a general meeting on April 18, in the presence of former Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, to chart a roadmap for addressing the crisis.
The FPFM warned that continued inaction could push farmers into debt and force many to abandon the sector entirely.
