SHILLONG, April 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday inaugurated an indoor sports hall and upgraded amenities at the St Mary’s College in Shillong.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the dedication and the quality of education provided by different denominations and missions inspire the government.
“Today, the government works hand in hand with these institutes to serve the people of the state,” Sangma said, disclosing that the state government spends about Rs 1,200 crore annually to support such institutions.
He said education is a very complex sector, inherent with issues and challenges at different levels.
“We had to dissect the education sector to identify the problems and resolve them. In doing so, we forgot the students for whom education is meant. When we began to change our mindset and focus on students, things started to improve,” Sangma said.
He urged every stakeholder in the education sector to keep students at the core of every decision.
Stating that education is important for the state to move forward, he said the decisions taken by the government in this sector will bear results and have an impact in the years to come.
“We are committed to bringing reformative and transformative changes in this sector. As we move forward, there will be challenges but we are determined,” he further stated.
During the event, equipment procured under grants from the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA 2.0) was also formally introduced.
RUSA 2.0 is a centrally sponsored scheme (2017-2020), aimed at enhancing access, equity, and quality in higher education in state universities and colleges.
