SHILLONG, April 11: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday informed that the state government is in the process of establishing homes for the elderly across Meghalaya based on the concept of “active and happy aging”.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Nabon Memorial Home at Mawiong Rim—an initiative of the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri Lum Presbytery—the chief minister stated that the home, named after the first Khasi Christian woman, reflects the core values of service and support for the needy.
The chief minister elaborated on a plan to integrate Anganwadi centres with these aging centres to foster inter-generational engagement.
He noted that Anganwadi centres, which are already central to the ‘Mission 1000 Days’ initiative for child development, could serve as facilitators for interaction between children and the elderly.
“The engagement between the young and the old will create a happy environment in society. Young children will learn to engage with and respect their elders, while the elders can teach the young the values of life and connect with them emotionally,” Sangma said.
He envisioned these centers as inter-generational spaces and vibrant hubs where seniors and children come together.
To support the newly inaugurated facility, the chief minister announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund for the Nabon Memorial Home.
