AMPATI, April 11: The A’chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has formally objected to the recent decision to change the status of the Garobadha Police Investigation Centre (PIC) to a police outpost, demanding that the order be revoked and its previous status restored.
In a representation submitted to the Superintendent of Police, South West Garo Hills, the ASPF expressed concern over the move announced on April 8.
While a police press release described the change as an “upgrade”, the ASPF argued that the transition is actually a “downgrade” that has caused public dissatisfaction.
The organisation highlighted that Garobadha is a strategic and sensitive area facing various security challenges. It contended that reducing the centre’s status would weaken local policing, as an outpost typically lacks the manpower, autonomy and operational capacity of an investigation centre to handle complex situations.
Terming the move a “regressive step”, the ASPF stated that the centre should instead be upgraded into a full-fledged police station to meet the region’s growing needs.
It warned that the change could create an administrative vacuum and compromise effective law enforcement in the area.
The ASPF urged authorities to rescind the order and take proactive steps toward establishing a full-fledged police station with adequate infrastructure and personnel.
The group also called for greater consultation with local stakeholders before such administrative decisions are made.
