SHILLONG, April 11: NEIGRIHMS is set to launch a massive awareness campaign on organ donation to highlight how a single donor can save or enhance up to 50 lives.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Dr. Nalin Mehta informed that the institute plans to conduct outreach in schools, colleges and the wider community.
He noted that while the local society is progressive, Meghalaya is currently not on the national organ transplant map, partly due to cultural beliefs and local perceptions regarding the practice.
The State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) has already established a nodal centre at NEIGRIHMS to coordinate these efforts.
Currently, the lack of local transplant facilities forces patients from the state to travel long distances for treatment, placing a significant financial and emotional burden on families. Meanwhile, in a separate development, Dr. Mehta informed that the institute is moving to establish an artificial limb centre.
Space for the facility has been identified, and the institute is awaiting final approval from the Ministry. Once operational, the centre will provide prosthetic limbs to the public free of cost.
