Tura, April 13: Two social activists from Garo Hills- Nilberth Ch Marak and Flaming Marak have urged the Meghalaya governor to facilitate the holding of elections to the GHADC, claiming that delaying the same by the state government is illegal and unreasonable.

“The postponing of the said election is illegal and without any valid reasons and has violated the rules framed therein. As per the rule the election can be postponed only on grounds of emergency such as declaration of War, Financial crisis and Natural calamities. However in the instant case none of the above circumstances have taken place and no reasonable and acceptable grounds had been cited by the government while postponing the election to the GHADC,” they stated, in their complaint to the official.

They pointed out that while violence had taken place in Garo Hills, the same had been maintained and controlled by the administration with normalcy returning to the region. They urged that the concerned authorities be immediately directed to conduct the election.

Further, pointing out that it was illegal and unconstitutional to extend the term of the current EC which had since expired, they urged that if the government found it an inconvenience to hold the elections at the present time, Administrators rule be imposed instead of extending the EC’s term.
