SHILLONG, April 12: Following the conclusion of elections in Assam, pressure is mounting to resume the long-delayed second phase of the Meghalaya-Assam boundary talks.
Nongpoh MLA and regional boundary committee member Mayralborn Syiem expressed confidence that engagement with Assam will restart soon, stating that Meghalaya is prepared for the next round of discussions and joint inspections.
Syiem said the state’s regional committee, led by the Deputy Chief Minister, will contact its Assam counterpart to schedule a meeting. While the first phase of the settlement faced dissatisfaction in some areas, Syiem maintained that the focus is now on the second phase, for which confirmation from Assam is awaited.
Reflecting on the decades-long dispute, Syiem noted that the issue has persisted despite multiple rounds of discussions under previous governments. He expressed optimism that the current MDA government’s approach would help resolve the remaining sectors.
He stated that Meghalaya’s position is guided by Paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule, historical background, geographical contiguity, and administrative considerations. He added that any outcome must be legally sound and acceptable to both states.
The delay in the second phase has sparked concern among political groups, including the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), which highlighted growing public unease over sensitive areas like Langpih that remain unresolved.
