SHILLONG, April 12: Ri-Bhoi district police have adopted a data-driven approach to traffic regulation along National Highway-6, combining active enforcement with research to improve road safety.
Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad said the strategy incorporates findings from a study by the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi), which identified blind spots and high-risk stretches along the highway.
Prasad stated that these inputs are being used for targeted interventions, moving beyond routine checks to a focused traffic management system. The police are also coordinating with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to install safety measures such as rumble strips and reflective markers at vulnerable points.
Over the past three months, intensified enforcement has led to the collection of several lakhs in fines from traffic violators. Regular naka checks are being conducted, particularly during weekends when tourist inflow increases vehicular movement.
The SP noted that while violations are recorded across all vehicle categories, speeding and reckless riding by motorcyclists remain a major concern. Consequently, special monitoring is being carried out for bikers, especially on the busy stretch between Byrnihat and Umiam.
Prasad maintained that integrating research with on-ground policing is essential to reducing accidents and improving safety on one of the region’s busiest highways.
