NHAI begins service lane work to tackle truck parking at Byrnihat
SHILLONG, April 13: To address haphazard truck parking along the Byrnihat-Jorabat highway, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started constructing a 1.5 km service lane. The stretch frequently experiences traffic congestion and fatal accidents due to hundreds of trucks parking in a disorganized manner. NHAI officials stated that in addition to the service lane, work has also begun on a foot overbridge and the installation of street lighting. The authority is also addressing waterlogging concerns in the area following complaints from nearby offices.
Rymbui announces funds for Jalaphet school infrastructure
KHLIEHRIAT, April 13: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui visited Jalaphet Bri Sutnga Government LP School on Saturday and announced Rs 40 lakh for the construction of additional classrooms to accommodate rising student enrolment. The visit followed a petition from the School Management Committee (SMC) highlighting the need for more space for its 330 students. Accompanied by Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla, Rymbui directed officials to expedite the appointment of two more teachers to meet academic requirements. The minister also sanctioned Rs 11 lakh for a store-cum-kitchen at the nearby Upper Primary School. MLA Santa Mary Shylla announced an additional Rs 20 lakh under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) scheme to support the construction project, reinforcing the government’s focus on improving rural education infrastructure.
Sngap Syiem College celebrates 41st Foundation Day
MAWKYRWAT, April 13: Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat, celebrated its 41st Foundation Day on Monday, marking over four decades of educational service in the region. The event was attended by Commissioner & Secretary of the Education department, Vijay Kumar Mantri, as the chief guest. During his visit, Mantri inspected the college’s permanent campus at Mawten village—proposed to address congestion at the current site—and visited the women’s hostel in Mawkyrwat. Addressing students at the college’s Multipurpose Hall, Mantri urged them to pursue excellence and specifically encouraged preparation for competitive examinations such as CUET and UPSC. On the sidelines of the celebration, the Commissioner & Secretary held an interaction with principals of secondary and higher secondary schools across South West Khasi Hills to discuss school welfare and development. He also visited Maharam Govt. Higher Secondary School to meet with staff and students. College Principal Dr KK Nongsiej highlighted the institution’s achievements and thanked the state government for its focus on improving the education system and teacher welfare. Other speakers included Additional Deputy Commissioner Neyra D Shira and State Higher Education Council Consultant Rangksan Mawroh. The day concluded with a coordination meeting involving district education officials, including DSEOs and Sub-Inspectors of Schools, followed by a visit to the Office of the DSEO, Mawkyrwat.
