SHILLONG, April 14: Former MLA Jemino Mawthoh has called for a cautious and transparent approach to development, citing concerns over environmental degradation and the need to protect state’s future.
Mawthoh stated that the state has already suffered significant damage in the name of development and stressed that further harm must be prevented. He noted that while Meghalaya is resource-rich, economic challenges persist for many, requiring a more balanced and responsible approach to growth.
Referring to issues raised by the Green-Tech Foundation, Mawthoh urged the government to address concerns regarding environmental safeguards and implementation. He pointed to inconsistencies between official reports and data presented by stakeholders, which have raised questions about the transparency of the process.
Stating that natural environment is a “common property resource” that does not belong to the government alone, Mawthoh called for inclusive consultation with all stakeholders to ensure sustainable development.
