NONGPOH, April 14: The Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi has issued an order prohibiting the dumping of garbage and waste in rivers, drains, and public spaces. The directive follows reports of shops, commercial establishments, and residents disposing of plastic, sewage, and animal waste into streams and along National Highways.
The administration noted that these practices block drainage channels and obstruct natural water flow, significantly increasing the risk of waterlogging and flash floods. Such conditions pose a direct threat to public safety and critical infrastructure.
Invoking the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the administration has banned the disposal of all waste—including debris and sewage—into rivers, culverts, or stormwater channels with immediate effect. All residents and businesses are required to use authorized waste collection systems or designated disposal sites.
Cowshed owners and business operators have been specifically directed to maintain cleanliness and ensure no waste is discharged into water bodies. Officials will conduct regular inspections to monitor compliance.
Violators will face strict action, including fines, prosecution, and penalties under municipal and environmental laws.
The order remains in force until further notice, and the public is urged to cooperate to ensure the district’s drainage systems remain clear.
