SHILLONG, April 15: The BJP Mahila Morcha in Meghalaya has voiced strong support for the 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies, stating that greater political participation is essential for inclusive governance and balanced development.
In a statement, Mahila Morcha state president Arena Hynniewta noted that while Meghalaya traditionally respects and empowers women, their representation in formal political institutions remains limited.
She pointed out that despite playing central roles in society, women’s presence in the State Assembly, Parliament, and District Councils is inadequate.
The organisation described the 33 per cent reservation as a necessary step to bridge this gap and ensure women have a stronger voice in decision-making. The Morcha further noted that while women are active in education, social work, and community leadership, their participation in electoral politics has not kept pace.
Calling for a shift in public mindset to encourage female candidates, the organisation stated that political empowerment is central to the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047.” The Morcha expressed hope that the reservation policy would pave the way for more women leaders in Meghalaya, creating a more equitable political landscape.
