Songsak PwD murder case: 15 accused held

WILLIAMNAGAR, April 15: In a major breakthrough in the murder of a Person with Disability (PwD) that took place on March 8 in Songsak, East Garo Hills Police confirmed the arrest of at least 15 persons who were allegedly directly involved in the brutal assault and murder.
The FIR filed by the brother of the victim, Talseng T. Sangma, had named at least 16 accused who had forcefully barged into the house of the victim armed with machetes and slingshots before they began their assault over a minor dispute that had taken place. The wife and father of the victim also suffered injuries but were later rescued by family members who whisked them away to safety.
Following the assault, Talseng who suffered multiple injuries on his face, head and torso was initially referred to the nearby Songsak PHC but owing to the grievous nature of the injuries suffered, he was rushed to the Williamnagar Civil Hospital. He succumbed to injuries en-route to the hospital. The father and wife of the victim are currently out of danger and are said to be recuperating at home.
The incident took place in the village of Dagal Nachikol in East Garo Hills on March 8 and an FIR was filed at the Williamnagar PS the next day.
Desecration of religious statue
Meanwhile, West Garo Hills Police confirmed on Wednesday that a case has been registered into the desecration of a religious statue at Chibinang Main Market.
“We have already made six arrests in the case and the investigation is currently ongoing. Further, a total of at least 40 arrests, including members of both communities involved, have been made,” informed a highly placed source from the district police.
On Tuesday, GHADC MDC from Tura Bernard N. Marak had filed an FIR in connection with the incident, alleging lack of action against the perpetrators.
