TURA, April 16: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MDC candidates met here on Tuesday to demand that the state government expedite the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections and finalise pending reforms.
The meeting focused on the protection of indigenous rights and the necessity of conducting elections without further extensions.
The candidates welcomed the mandatory Scheduled Tribe (ST) status requirement for all candidates, stating it ensures the council remains a safeguard for the indigenous community.
Referencing a formal request by Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, the candidates reiterated the need to amend the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951, to formally adopt the Garo Hills Autonomous District Amendment Rules, 2026.
While acknowledging the postponement of elections to maintain peace, the candidates asserted that administrative tasks—including the preparation of separate electoral rolls and delimitation—should not require a six-month window.
They demanded that the government conduct the GHADC elections immediately after legislative amendments are passed in the upcoming session.
The leadership also called on all MDCs to set aside party lines and act collectively as lawmakers to secure the rights of the Scheduled Tribes of Garo Hills.
