SHILLONG, April 16: The Meghalaya unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday demanded that the Executive Committee (EC) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) be reconstituted as an all-party body or placed under an Administrator, citing a lack of mandate and corruption allegations.
State NCP president Omilo K Sangma stated that the current EC, led by the National People’s Party (NPP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC), should not continue following the extension of the council’s tenure.
“We feel that the two parties currently leading the EC do not have the mandate to continue, especially in light of corruption allegations. The EC should either be reconstituted into an all-party coalition or be run by an appointed Administrator,” Sangma said.
Following a meeting in Tura, the party adopted several resolutions, including a demand to hold the GHADC elections within six months of the postponement date.
The NCP also proposed the introduction of a separate electoral roll exclusively for the Garo community, similar to provisions in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills councils. It further urged that only candidates from Garo Scheduled Tribes be permitted to contest the elections.
Other demands include the immediate release of individuals arrested during protests against non-tribal participation in the electoral process and a formal inquiry into alleged corruption and administrative mismanagement in the GHADC over the past 22 years.
Sangma said these steps are necessary to ensure governance and prevent the council from collapsing.
