SHILLONG, April 19: The protest led by the Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) Meghalaya at Malki Ground entered its eleventh day on Sunday, with the organisation’s secretary general, Ritre Lyngdoh, continuing his indefinite hunger strike amid growing tension over the controversial Lumpongdeng Island lease.
Lyngdoh began his fast on Friday evening following the hospitalisation of GTF chairman H. Bansiewdor Nonglang, whose health had deteriorated after several days on hunger strike.
Nonglang was initially shifted to Civil Hospital and later taken to Woodland Hospital by family members on Saturday evening.
Despite concerns over his condition, Lyngdoh stated that he remains determined to continue the protest.
Speaking to reporters, he said doctors monitored his health twice on Sunday and noted signs of weakening vitals. However, he maintained that he feels “fine,” apart from slight dehydration, and expressed gratitude for the public support that has sustained his resolve over the past 48 hours.
The ongoing agitation has taken a more serious tone, with the GTF issuing a stark warning to the state government on Saturday.
The foundation cautioned that “two dead bodies may leave in ambulances from Malki Ground” if authorities fail to revoke the lease of the island and return it to what they describe as its rightful public ownership.
The warning comes against the backdrop of mounting opposition to the government’s decision to lease the island for 60 years for the luxury resort and spa.
The GTF accused the government of ignoring public concerns and adopting an uncompromising stance on the issue.
