ACA condoles demise of cricket stalwart Badal Thakur

GUWAHATI, April 20: Assam Cricket Association (ACA) on Monday condoled the passing of Badal Thakur, one of the pioneering figures of Assam cricket and a distinguished former first-class cricketer.
“With his demise on Sunday evening, Assam cricket has lost one of its most respected torchbearers, whose contributions played a significant role in shaping the sport in the state,” a condolence statement issued by ACA said.
A dependable all-rounder of his time, 94-year-old had represented Assam with distinction in 17 Ranji Trophy matches, scoring 566 runs and taking 26 wickets.
A resident of Barowari here, Thakur had made his debut in the 1952–53 Ranji Trophy season against Odisha and later had the honour of leading the Assam team with pride, dedication and exemplary leadership.
His rich cricketing journey also saw him represent Railways for 12 years, reflecting his enduring commitment and stature in Indian domestic cricket.
Thakur’s immense contribution to the growth and development of cricket in Assam has left an enduring legacy.“His dedication, leadership, and unwavering passion for the sport played a pivotal role in laying the foundation upon which Assam cricket continues to grow today. His life and work will remain a source of inspiration for countless young cricketers in the years to come,” the statement issued by ACA, read.
As a mark of profound respect and gratitude for his enduring service to Assam cricket, ACA had assumed full responsibility for the expenses of his medical treatment.
ACA president Taranga Gogoi and secretary Sanatan Das and other apex council members conveyed their deepest condolences, stating that the void created by his passing would be deeply felt across the cricketing community, and that his remarkable legacy will forever remain etched in the history of Assam cricket.
