SHILLONG, April 20: BJP national secretary in-charge for Meghalaya, Anil K Antony, on Monday said the party is set to emerge as a significantly stronger force in Meghalaya ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections, citing its growth across the Northeast.
Addressing a press conference, Antony noted that while the BJP had no governing presence in the region seven years ago, today seven out of the eight Northeastern states are governed by the NDA.
“The BJP is the largest party in four states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Tripura. In other states, our organisational base is expanding steadily,” Antony said. He added that the party’s long-term objective is to become the leading political force in Meghalaya by strengthening its grassroots structure and connecting with voters on key issues.
Regarding the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, Antony noted that the polls have been postponed, likely until October. However, he maintained that the BJP was already well-prepared before the delay.
“We were among the first to announce candidates. We had declared names for nearly all 29 seats, and our candidates were already active on the ground,” he said.
Antony expressed confidence that the BJP would improve on its previous performance of two seats in the last GHADC elections. “With the groundwork already done and our organisational strength increasing, we are optimistic of a much better performance this time,” he added.
