SHILLONG, April 20: Mission Director of the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM), Francis Kharshiing, on Monday said the initiative has significantly reduced drug abuse in Meghalaya through its multi-pronged strategy.
Kharshiing stated that the mission has identified several hotspots across the state, particularly in urban areas. The Cantonment area has been flagged as one such zone, where inspections and countermeasures have already been implemented.
To further curb trafficking, the government plans to install vehicle scanners at key entry points to the state to detect smuggling attempts. Kharshiing also highlighted the successful use of trained dogs by the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) in detecting narcotics.
Addressing the need for rehabilitation, Kharshiing noted that Meghalaya currently has only 14 centres. He confirmed that directions have been issued to establish rehabilitation facilities in every district to strengthen support for those affected by substance abuse.
The Mission Director also acknowledged the contribution of NGOs and community organisations, stating that active collaboration remains central to the mission’s efforts to eliminate the drug menace.
