SHILLONG, April 20: Services at the Shillong General Post Office (GPO) were temporarily disrupted on Monday due to ongoing renovation work, causing inconvenience to customers and the general public.
Located at Kachari in Secretariat Hills, the GPO is a major hub for postal, financial and retail services in the city. However, a visit to the premises revealed that renovation activities are in full swing, with service counters being dismantled as part of efforts to upgrade the facility.
The suspension of counter services forced several customers to return without completing essential transactions. Many depend on the GPO for services such as mail dispatch, savings schemes, and bill payments.
Senior Postmaster Kadamba Singh informed that the dismantling of the counter area has affected normal operations. He clarified that while services were not entirely halted, cash transactions faced disruptions.
“We will try our best to normalise services from tomorrow. However, we cannot function in full capacity as the entire counter area is being dismantled,” Singh said.
He added that services will resume from inside office rooms instead of the usual counters. Temporary wiring arrangements are also being set up to facilitate operations. Postal services such as booking of letters are being handled downstairs, while savings and recurring deposit services are being managed from within office rooms.
Despite the challenges, the department has assured that efforts are being made to provide maximum possible services during the renovation period.
Meanwhile, customers have been advised to visit nearby post offices, including the Laban branch and other locations in the city. Notices regarding the temporary disruption have also been displayed at the GPO.
The Shillong GPO offers a range of services, including Speed Post, registered mail, international courier services, small savings schemes, Postal Life Insurance (PLI), and retail services such as bill payments.
