TURA, April 20: A severe hailstorm and heavy rain early Tuesday caused widespread damage across several villages in South Garo Hills, leaving hundreds of residents in distress.
Large hailstones damaged roofs and structures in at least four villages under the Gasuapara block. Mibonpara was the hardest hit, with approximately 120 houses damaged. Other affected areas include Rangmai Aruwako (40 houses), Durida (19 houses), and Tojananggre (9 houses). Beyond structural destruction, many families reportedly lost essential household items. The affected villages fall within the constituency of MLA and MDC Sengchim N. Sangma. Villagers alleged that attempts to contact their representative for immediate assistance went unanswered, claiming that calls were ignored and his phone was later switched off.
Residents expressed fear over their vulnerability to further adverse weather and appealed for urgent intervention from the local administration and elected officials. They warned that without timely support, many families could be left without shelter if the rains continue.
