JOWAI, April 21: The Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM) has urged the state government to intervene after a significant number of Meghalaya candidates appearing for the upcoming Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examinations were assigned centres outside the state.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the JSM highlighted that while candidates were previously allotted centers in Shillong, many have now been assigned locations as far as Jorhat, Assam.
The organization noted that the shift in location, combined with the examination schedule being delayed from February to late April, has caused severe inconvenience. Candidates are now forced to bear additional costs for travel and accommodation, which the JSM stated many find unaffordable.
“This sudden change has caused considerable inconvenience to candidates, especially those from the Jaintia Hills region,” the JSM stated. The group added that the long-distance travel and limited preparation time could negatively affect performance.
With the examinations scheduled to begin on April 27, the JSM called on the state government to take up the matter with the relevant authorities to ensure the re-allotment of centers within Meghalaya, preferably in Shillong. It also requested that future examinations be scheduled in a more timely manner to avoid similar logistical challenges.
