SHILLONG, April 23: Two men were found dead in separate hanging incidents in Shillong on Thursday morning, prompting police investigations in both cases.
In the first incident, a 38-year-old man identified as Mithun Gurung, a resident of Lumparing, died by suicide after hanging himself with a nylon rope from a flagpole inside the premises of Laban Police Station around 6 AM.
According to police, the man had been seen loitering and sitting in front of the police station before the incident.
A senior police official said the station gates were open for public access during the early hours, and the act happened within minutes. Police also said the deceased had no criminal record and appeared to have a history of mental disturbance and alcoholism.
The CCTV inside the police station was reportedly not functioning, but nearby Smart City cameras are being used to piece together the sequence of events.
In a second incident, a 21-year-old youth was found hanging under suspicious circumstances from the verandah railing of the Bomver market complex at Lai Mer, Upper Shillong, around 7 AM. The deceased was identified as Vijay Kumar Singh, a resident of Riat Sohkhlur, Block-10, Nongkseh, Upper Shillong. The body was discovered by people arriving to open the SBI ATM on the ground floor of the building.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said the position of the body indicated a case of partial hanging and that there were no visible injury marks, pointing towards suicide.
The body was later shifted to NEIGRIHMS for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered an unnatural death case in the incident.
