SHILLONG, April 23: The BJP has alleged that taxes currently imposed on traders by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) are “illegal” as they lack mandatory approval from the Governor.
State BJP vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak claimed that revised taxation rates are being enforced across Garo Hills despite not receiving the required assent. He questioned the authority behind the collections, stating the move contravenes constitutional provisions governing autonomous district councils.
Marak urged the Chief Executive Member of the GHADC and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to intervene immediately. He stated that traders should not be burdened with unapproved taxes and called for swift corrective action from the authorities.
