TURA, April 28: West Garo Hills police have arrested a man for allegedly posing as a Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) employee to swindle money from consumers.
The accused, Kissan B Marak of Ampati, was apprehended by a team from Jengjal Police Station on April 27 following a raid. Marak had reportedly been evading arrest for a significant period.
The arrest follows a case registered at Jengjal Police Station regarding an incident on April 10. According to the FIR, Marak visited a residence in Nengkalgre, falsely identified himself as a MePDCL official, and collected Rs 6,750 as payment for an electricity bill. The complainant later discovered Marak was not a genuine representative and reported the matter to the police.
Investigations revealed that Marak is a habitual offender, with six other cases of a similar nature registered against him in various police stations across the district. Police suspect there may be more victims who have not yet come forward due to a lack of awareness.
In a press communiqué, the district police urged residents who have been cheated by individuals impersonating government staff to lodge an FIR at their nearest station. Authorities also advised the public to remain vigilant and verify the credentials of any official before making payments.
