MAWKYRWAT, April 28: Mawkyrwat MLA and former PHE Minister Renikton L Tongkhar is set to return to the National People’s Party (NPP) at the end of the current term. The move follows a decision by his supporters to join the party en masse next month.
A public notice circulating on social media, signed by Tongkhar’s key supporters, has called for all leaders and followers—including women and youth—to attend a meeting at Nativity Hall, Mawkyrwat, on May 2 at 11 AM.
The gathering will mark their formal entry into the NPP.
The decision was finalised during a general meeting held on April 16 at Dorbar Hall, Mawkyrwat, where supporters unanimously resolved to join the party.
NPP Mawkyrwat Block leaders confirmed the development, stating that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong is expected to attend the May 2 event to welcome the new members.
While sources within the UDP Mawkyrwat Circle indicated that a vast majority of Tongkhar’s base is moving with him, they noted that some leaders from certain primary units did not attend the April 16 meeting.
Sources claim the decision to rejoin the NPP is tied to several developmental promises for the constituency. These include the construction of the intermediate road from Weiloi to Mawkyrwat, the establishment of a C&RD Block in the Shiliang Um Rilang area, and the provincialisation of Sngap Syiem College.
Tongkhar, who began his political career with the NPP, had shifted to the UDP before this scheduled return.
