SHILLONG, April 30: The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has issued a public safety advisory ahead of the monsoon season, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts five days of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain across Meghalaya.
Residents are advised to secure loose objects such as tin sheets and signboards, which could be displaced by strong winds, and to unplug electrical appliances during lightning. The administration also warned against venturing near rivers, streams, and waterfalls, noting that even shallow, fast-moving water poses a significant risk.
The advisory further cautioned against driving through flooded areas and urged the public to stay clear of electric poles and power lines to prevent electrocution. For emergencies, citizens can dial 112. The district administration has also released a directory of contact numbers for officials to facilitate quick disaster response.
The IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Shillong predicted gusty winds of 30–40 kmph starting April 29.
On Monday, parts of East Khasi Hills were placed under an orange alert for very heavy rainfall and winds reaching 50 kmph, while other districts remained under a yellow alert.
Similar weather patterns are expected through April 30, specifically affecting the Garo Hills and eastern regions. Although the intensity is forecast to ease slightly on May 1 and 2, moderate rainfall and isolated heavy showers will persist. By May 3, the state is expected to remain under a yellow alert, indicating continued lightning and heavy rain in isolated areas.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly in areas prone to lightning, and to stay updated on official weather advisories.
