Britney Spears has been charged in California with a misdemeanour count of driving under the influence of alcohol and at least one drug, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
The case stems from a March 4 incident when she was pulled over on US 101 for allegedly driving erratically and was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of DUI
She was later released on bail, and prosecutors said she is eligible for a possible “wet reckless” plea due to no prior DUI history, no crash, and low severity factors.
Spears has since entered substance abuse treatment.
Authorities said standard procedures will apply, and she is not required to appear in court for arraignment. Her representative called the incident “inexcusable” but supportive of her recovery efforts.
Spears remains one of pop music’s most iconic figures, known for hits like Toxic and …Baby One More Time, and has largely stepped back from music in recent years. (AP)
