SHILLONG, May 3: A total of 6,200 metric tonnes (MT) of coal has been extracted from three scientifically operated mining leases in Meghalaya since June last year, the 37th Interim Report of the one-man committee headed by Justice (retd) B.P. Katakey has stated.
The report records that extraction has been carried out under mining leases granted in accordance with the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, in favour of Dapmain Shylla, Leborlang Lyngdoh and Shainingstar Khardewsaw.
According to the report, the three mines have produced 600 MT, 3,000 MT and 2,600 MT of coal respectively, all of which has been transported from the mine sites to designated storage depots. Each lease holder has set up one depot for storage, and extraction from these mines commenced between June and November 2025.
Of the total quantity extracted, 3,048.67 MT has been transported to other states within the country as of January 31, 2026, while the remaining quantity is yet to be moved. No coal has been exported to any foreign country so far.
The report further notes that procedures for transportation of scientifically mined coal have been issued by the state government, and movement of coal is being carried out in accordance with these guidelines.
The findings form part of the Committee’s assessment of coal mining under legally granted leases, distinguishing such operations from concerns related to illegal mining and transportation being examined separately.
