GUWAHATI, May 5: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday said the Opposition party would pursue all means possible to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

Addressing mediapersons at Rajiv Bhawan here, a day after the party’s poor show in the Assembly elections, Gogoi, while accepting moral responsibility for the poll debacle and underscoring the need for introspection, expressed concern over the functioning of electronic voting machines and the role of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

“Our petition on issues related to the electoral process remains pending before the Supreme Court. At the same time, Congress and other Opposition parties have brought a no-confidence motion against the Chief Election Commissioner,” he said.

The APCC chief further said many questions raised in the past by Rahul Gandhi regarding fairness, transparency and accuracy in the electoral process have never been answered.

“We all understand how the ECI is working. So, we will pursue all means possible in order to protect the integrity of the electoral process,” Gogoi said.

“My only concern is that the BJP leadership does not believe in a neutral and fair electoral process. They believe in one India, one party. And for that, they have to finish off other parties, and the only way to weaken or finish off other parties is by completely destabilising the electoral process, which is leading India into a very dangerous path,” he claimed.

“All of us who are concerned about the future of democracy, irrespective of which political party is in power, democratic rights of Indian citizens should be protected,” he said.
