Kathmandu, May 4: Nepal’s cabinet, led by Balendra Shah, has resubmitted a Constitutional Council ordinance to President Ram Chandra Paudel without changes, a day after it was returned for reconsideration. The ordinance, if endorsed, would allow the government to make appointments to key constitutional bodies, including the Chief Justice, several of which have remained vacant.
The president had earlier sent the ordinance back, stating it required further review. The cabinet’s decision to resend it was taken at a meeting in Singdurbar, according to officials. The move has drawn criticism from opposition parties, especially the Nepali Congress, which questioned the timing of the ordinance, noting it was introduced after the suspension of Parliament. The government has defended the process, saying it is aimed at ensuring smooth functioning of constitutional institutions. (PTI)
