SHILLONG, May 5: The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Building Bye-Laws, 2021, easing requirements for the ‘Special Projects’ category to encourage planned large-scale urban development. The amendment lowers the entry threshold for projects such as hotels, healthcare facilities, shopping malls, educational institutions, and ICT/BPO centres.
Previously, these developments required a minimum plot size of 50,000 sq. ft. and a built-up area of 20,000 sq. ft. Under the new rules, the requirements have been reduced to 37,500 sq. ft. and 15,000 sq. ft., respectively.
MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said the move is intended to make the category more inclusive for landowners. “This will enable more landowners to qualify under the Special Projects category, encourage multi-storey developments, boost investment, and generate employment,” Shylla said, adding that the change promotes more efficient use of urban land.
