Baghmara, May 7: The FKJGP – Nongalbibra circle, through a complaint to the union minister of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari, has supported the call of social activist, Greneth Sangma opposing the transfer of the upcoming NH 217 to the NHIDCL over what they called negligence.
Two days ago, Sangma had written to the union ministry opposing the road being transferred to the NHIDCL and asked for the same to be handled by the PWD division itself.
“We stand in absolute solidarity with the grievances raised concerning the systemic negligence in the management of NH-217. As a primary stakeholder representing the people of SGH we seek intervention into the “paper-only” completion of the Tura-Dalu section (Km 85 to Km 145),” said general secretary Austin Sangma.
Sangma pointed to what he called administrative claims of the Tura – Dalu road’s completion where ground reality showed the project far from being complete.
“The Shillong-Baghmara road has shown rapid deterioration almost immediately after its completion. This underscores the inability of NHIDCL-contracted firms to deliver infrastructure capable of withstanding the heavy rainfall and unique terrain of the Garo Hills. Further handing over the Tura Bypass and Dainadubi-Darugiri expansion to NHIDCL, given their current track record, poses a direct threat to the safety and livelihood of our citizens,” they added.
Through the complaint, the FKJGP sought the immediate halt to any ongoing process to transfer NH-217 project components to NHIDCL asking for the same to remain under the state’s NH division. They also sought an independent inquiry into the false completion reports and technical failure of current NHIDCL works in the district.
