SHILLONG, May 6: Union Minister for Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday virtually inaugurated India’s 100th New Generation (N-Gen) Post Office at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The facility represents a national push to modernise the postal network through youth-centric design and services.
Drawing inspiration from Shillong’s identity as the “Rock Capital of India,” the post office features a café-style setting equipped with musical instruments, including guitars, drums, and flutes. NEHU students participated in the design process, blending modern aesthetics with local cultural motifs to transform the space from a conventional service center into a social hub.
Inaugurating the facility from New Delhi, Scindia announced plans to establish more than 500 N-Gen post offices at universities across the country. He noted the postal department’s historical role in connecting families and stressed the importance of making these spaces more relevant to younger generations. The minister also encouraged officials to host musical evenings and student-centric programmes at the venue.
The event at NEHU was attended by Postmaster General (North East-II) Joseph Lalrinsailova and Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Sumarbin Umdor, alongside students and faculty. Scindia indicated he would visit the facility personally during his next trip to Shillong.
Postal officials said the N-Gen initiative reflects a broader effort to blend tradition with modern aspirations, creating service points that connect more meaningfully with the public.
