Vivek Agnihotri’s film The Bengal Files is set to be screened in Kolkata from Friday, months after facing controversy and delays in its release in West Bengal following its September release last year.
The film reportedly ran into distribution and screening issues in the state, with Agnihotri alleging that it was blocked from being shown in theatres.
Following the recent political developments in the state, Agnihotri posted on social media claiming that the film had been previously banned, referring to alleged opposition from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
He also said earlier efforts to promote and screen the film in Bengal were met with resistance, including FIRs and disruptions during promotional events.
Despite these challenges, the filmmaker said the team continued efforts to ensure the film reached audiences in the state.
He also referenced earlier difficulties faced during the release of The Kashmir Files, stating that he had been “cancelled” in Bengal but persisted with distribution efforts.
Film distributor Arijit Dutta of Priya Cinemas confirmed that the film will now be released in Kolkata, while distributor Satadeep Saha said screenings are being planned across multiple theatres in Bengal.
The release marks the end of a prolonged dispute over the film’s availability in the state and its eventual return to local cinemas. (Agencies)
