SHILLONG, May 7: The Union of Cook-cum-Helpers under PM POSHAN Meghalaya on Thursday urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to release their pending honorarium for the period of February to April 2026.
The union’s president, Gina Nengnong, made the appeal following a Central Executive Committee meeting at Mawtneng in Ri-Bhoi.
She noted that the current honorarium is fixed at a meagre Rs 2,000 per month.
Nengnong also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to increase the Centre’s financial contribution.
She pointed out that the central government’s share for Northeastern states has remained stagnant at Rs 900 per month for over a decade despite repeated representations.
The union requested the chief minister, who also holds the Finance portfolio, to personally take up the matter with the prime minister to secure a better deal for workers in the region.
Additionally, the union urged Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to implement a transfer policy for cooks. Nengnong suggested that in schools where student enrolment has significantly declined, cook-cum-helpers should be transferred to institutions with higher enrolment, similar to the policy currently in place for teachers.
The meeting saw participation from office-bearers representing various districts and C&RD blocks across the state.
