SHILLONG, May 7: Chief Minister and NPP national president, Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said political parties are free to make claims about forming the next government, but maintained that the final decision would rest with the people and electoral numbers.
His remarks came in response to recent assertions by the Meghalaya unit of the BJP that it was confident of leading the state government in 2028 following its performance in recent elections. Sangma said every political party has the democratic right to express its ambitions and make statements regarding future political prospects. However, he stressed that elections are ultimately decided by the people and the mandate reflected in the numbers.
The Chief Minister also responded to questions on the NPP’s recent political setbacks in Assam, stating that the party was not discouraged by the outcome and instead viewed it as part of a longer political journey. He said nothing had gone wrong in Assam and maintained that what mattered was the courage to expand politically despite challenges and setbacks.
Drawing a comparison with the party’s initial expansion in Manipur, Sangma said the NPP had started with just two members there before gradually growing over time. According to him, leadership and organisational strength are defined by the willingness to take difficult steps despite adverse circumstances. He admitted that the party had faced a difficult phase in Assam but said that would not deter the NPP from moving forward. He added that the party would learn from the developments and work towards improving its performance in the future.
