SHILLONG, May 8: The state government is awaiting confirmation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the formal inauguration of the Shillong Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said the government wants the event to be held in a significant manner as the SMCH is a long-awaited institution for the people of the state.
The dates for the inauguration had earlier been discussed with the Prime Minister’s Office. However, the programme had to be deferred due to other official engagements. Discussions are now under way to finalise a fresh date.
The minister said the government is keen to hold the inauguration at the earliest, especially since the first MBBS session has already commenced.
“Classes have already started and we are now waiting for a date from the Prime Minister. We want the Prime Minister himself to inaugurate the Shillong Medical College,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shylla said preparations are also under way for the launch of the Tura Medical College.
He said advertisements have already been issued for the recruitment of professors and faculty members for the institution.
“Our objective is to ensure that the next academic session begins on time. However, that will depend on the availability of professors and faculty members required to run the medical college,” the minister added.
